The decarbonisation of the power system led to the integration of decentralised energy resources, and based on that, the concept of virtual power plants emerged along with aggregators. Aggregators, as actors operating virtual power plants, are commonly fulfilling the role of bridging the gap between customer, markets and grid operator demands through services. On an abstract level, the definitions of an aggregator strive for a common direction, but their function and characteristics can vary. Thus, the variety, which an aggregator can inherit, needs to be carried out to understand their role in the power system and to comprehend why aggregators differ from each other. In this paper, state-of-the-art taxonomies are analysed along with a literature review on use cases where aggregators are involved. The derived taxonomy for aggregators will be applied as proof of concept on an existing pilot project. The contribution of this paper is that the aggregator taxonomy promotes a common understanding of aggregators in terms of their heterogeneity and functions.
