HUMAN Model-based Analysis of Human errors during Aircraft Cockpit System Design

Goal

The goal of the project is to facilitate the consideration of pilot errors in the current design process for aeronautical systems. The project will focus on deviations from normative pilot activities because written procedures and rules of good airmanship are a crucial element of the aeronautical safety system. However, empirical studies of pilot behaviour have shown that pilots develop an abstract and partially simplified mental model of the normative activities based on their experience during line operation. According to the SRA of ACARE the reduction of human errors and its consequences is a major challenge in the aeronautics research. The SRA suggests to tackle this challenge by building up a knowledge foundation of human performance, its application to the development of robust design and the implementation of working practices and training, the holistic approach to Safety management. The proposed project follows this approach with a focus on robust design and working practices understood as pilot activities. The industrial applicability of the error prediction methodology will be demonstrated using an Advanced Flight Management System with an Enhanced Human Interface as a common case study system.
