Fliegerhorst (Air Base) Smart City

Fliegerhorst (Air Base) Smart City How can the city of the future achieve a collaborative energy supply?

Redevelopment of the City of Oldenburg’s air base (Fliegerhorst) offers the city a unique opportunity to position itself as a pioneer in the development of smart city concepts for mid-sized cities, not just for mega-cities. Since 2016 OFFIS has been developing with and for the City of Oldenburg a smart city strategy that will be evaluated in an area of the former air base envisaged for use as a smart city living lab.

In the mid- to long-term the area will be available for use within the scope of various research topics and their practical implementation in the fields of energy, transportation, city administration, and quality of life. As a fi rst pilot project, jointly managed by OFFIS and the City of Oldenburg, a climate-friendly residential neighborhood is being planned and realized in cooperation with a total of 21 research and industrial partners from the region. The energy supply requirements of approximate 110 residential units in total, comprising existing and newly constructed buildings, should be met as far as possible using locally generated energy. The collaborative aspect will be realized, among other things, by distributing energy generation and storage across various buildings and operators – within the scope of an energy neighborhood district. The measuring, communication, and process infrastructure required for this purpose will be developed within the scope of the »Energy Neighborhood District (ENaQ) Fliegerhorst Oldenburg« lighthouse project, funded by the German Federal Ministries of Education & Research and Economics. Further health- and mobility-related project modules for a smart city are also already under development.

Further information on the ENaQ project can be found at: https://www.enaq-fliegerhorst.de/

Information from the city of Oldenburg about the Quartier Fliegerhorst can be found here.
