RAPIDO'14: 6th Workshop on Rapid Simulation and Performance Evaluation: Methods and Tools
In today's systems, extra-function properties like timing, power, and temperature are becoming increasingly important. Complex multi- application scenarios, especially for systems with changing (real-time) environments, have to be modelled and analysed at the system and platform level to capture the cross-application interferences with respect to timing, power and thermal properties. They can strongly affect the overall quality of service (performance, battery lifetime) or even cause the system to fail meeting its (real-time) requirements. In this talk, a SystemC-based simulation framework for capturing extra-functional properties in virtual prototyping simulations is presented. This covers the specification of platform properties (extra-functional model) as well as the dynamic capturing, processing, and extraction of power/temperature information during the simulation. Especially closing the loop back to the application and run-time services is an important feature for complex hardware platforms and software stacks. As a concluding part of this talk, future standardization needs are discussed, in order to enable model-interoperability while including extra-functional properties in the virtual platform simulation.
