DKFZ-RT Standardized Exchange of Information in Radiotherapy

Goal

In a project with the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), OFFIS is doing research on how information in the area of radiotherapy can be efficiently and flexibly processed. In radiotherapy, medical images and various kinds of other data are collected in order to get a detailled plan for radiotherapy treatment. This plan exactly describes a schedule of therapy sessions, including precise information about which dose is to be applied to wich part of the patient's body and also providing the necessary processing parameters to the radiation machine. A radiation plan always aims at destroying morbid while conserving healthy tissue. OFFIS, being an expert in the medical image communication standard DICOM, and the DKFZ with its expertise in radiotherapy, are going to do research how data in radiotherapy can be efficiently processed. The project aims at improving the standard-based data exchange between existing and upcoming software in the area of radiotherapy, especially with focus on clinical research. The project also is supported by the OFFIS spin-off ICSMED AG. All results from research, including any developed software prototypes, will be made available to the public.
