Mobility and transportation systems are important for modern societies. They ensure personal mobility as well as the availability of lots of goods. However, the increasing traffic by car, train, plane and ship also increases the risk of serious accidents with dangerous injuries, fatalities as well as environmental damages. Therefore, modern transportation systems are already equipped with a number of automation systems, supporting human drivers, pilots and captains to avoid accidents. Modern cars for example are already equipped with a number of advanced driver assistance systems taking over longitudinal control or supporting in lateral steering of the car. Future cars will even be able to drive fully autonomously. Modern ships having a length up to 400m even cannot be steered anymore without any automation function. But also within these, there will still be an increase in automation in the next future.
The group „cooperative mobile systems“ focuses on the development and testing of automation systems in the domains automotive and maritime. Cooperative driving functions of highly automated cars or new e-Navigation solutions are prototypically developed and tested within this group. Within the maritime domain, the CMS group develops and operates the e-Maritime Integrated Reference Platform eMIR. This platform provides a simulation environment for simulation based testing, validation and verification for new e-Navigation solutions. Additionally, also a physical environment with sensors and a research boat has been developed and is available at the German North Sea coast. Besides this, the CMS group also develops methods for validation and verification of these Cyber Physical Systems of Systems.
