Research Focus

Zu Beginn seiner Tätigkeit hat Manuel sich in die Entwicklung von Kraftmesseinrichtungen/Sensoren und Methoden für die Kraftmessung auf der Mikroskala eingearbeitet. Dieses Wissen setzt er seit Mai 2011 dazu ein, um mechanische Messungen an Cellulosefasern, -fibrillen und Filmen aus mikrofibrillierter Cellulose (MFC) vorzunehmen. Das Ziel dieser Untersuchungen ist es die Ultrastruktur der Cellulosefasern und ihrer Bestandteile sowie die Interaktionen auf der Mikro- und Nanoskala zwischen diesen Bestandteilen genauer zu beleuchten. Die mechanischen Eigenschaften stellen einen weiteren wichtigen Beitrag zum Verständnis dieses natürlichen Rohstoffs und nachhaltigen Materials dar. Dazu entwickelt er mikro- und nanorobotische Systeme, die mit mehreren Manipulatoren und Sensoren am gleichen Objekt arbeiten können. Um diesen Bereich in der europaweiten Forschergemeinde aktiv mitzugestalten ist Manuel als Verwaltungsratsmitglied in der COST Action FP1105 mit dem Titel "Understanding wood cell wall structure, biopolymer interaction and composition: implications for current products and new material innovation" tätig. In diesem Netzwerkprojekt geht es darum, das Wissen über Cellulose als nachhaltigen Rohstoff für vielfältige Anwendungen - auch abseits von Papier - durch Aufbauen eines ganzheitlichen Verständnisses zu verbessern. Dazu kommen Kompetenzen aus den verschiedensten Bereichen zusammen: Physik, Biologie, Genforschung, Messtechnik, Papierherstellung und anderen. --- English Version --- In the beginning of his work at AMiR, Manuel looked into the development of measurement facilities/sensors and methods for measurement of forces on the micro- and nanoscale. Since May 2011 he uses this knowledge as a base for his activities in the measurement of mechanical properties of cellulose fibres and fibrils as well as microfibrillated cellulose (MFC). His research aims to unveil the ultrastructure of the cellulose fibres and their components and their interactions on the micro- and nanoscale. The mechanical properties are of a major concern for the understanding of this environmental friendly and sustainable raw material. He develops micro- and nanorobotic systems to be able to manipulate and perform measurements with different tools and sensors simultaneously and in-situ on the same material. Manuel actively shapes this research in the European research community by acting as a management committee member of the COST Action FP1105 "Understanding wood cell wall structure, biopolymer interaction and composition: implications for current products and new material innovation." This network project aims at building a holistic understanding of cellulose as sustainable raw material for many different applications - not just exclusively paper. Different competencies are brought together: Physicists, Biologists, Gene researchers, Measurement specialists, Paper scientists, and other.
